About 1st Grade
Mrs. Kathy Gregory
It is my job to help my students learn cooperative behaviors and advance academically while I foster their self esteem and love for learning in a safe, welcoming environment.
First Grade students read and write daily. We implement the Daily 5, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Word Work, Listening and Writing choices each day. In addition students read, “good fit” books during guided reading and for reading homework everyday.
We use the Write Tools program to teach students to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish their expository, descriptive, and narrative writing. DLI focuses on grammar skills to be transferred into their writing. Making Meaning is our new language arts curriculum focusing on meaning and comprehension.
This year we will use a Spelling program called SRA Spelling Mastery. SRA teaches students dependable spelling skills by blending the phonemic, whole-word, and morphemic approaches.
First grade will complete the Everyday Mathematics curriculum adopted by Ouray Elementary. Students will have the opportunity to relate math to their everyday world through math games, problem solving, and a variety of manipulatives. Students will receive homework almost every night. This homework may be completed with parent help and should take an average of 10 minutes to finish. Family letters are sent home at the start of each unit with answers to every problem. The homework is not graded, but is a component of learning responsibility as well as enhancing math concepts.
Ouray Elementary School is following the FOSS (Full Option Science System) science curriculum this year. First Grade units will be: Insects, Solids and Liquids, and Pebbles, Sand, and Silt. Each unit is spread over 8-10 weeks.
TAKE HOME FOLDERS
Folders are sent home every weekday. Please read and review information with your child and return the following morning and on Monday. These are one of our most important communication tools. Your child will be participating in, primarily, hands on math, science, and reading activities. I will send a “good fit” book home with your child from their book bag in addition to their math homework for reading minutes. If you are interested in seeing any of their at school work, please feel free to come in. I will do my best to keep you apprised of what is happening in the classroom in my weekly newsletter. Thank you for sharing your child with me. Let’s work together to make this the best possible year for them!

I'm Glad I'm Me
No one looks The way I do.
I have noticed That it’s true.
No one talks the way I talk.
No one walks the way I walk.
No one plays the way I play.
No one says the things I say.
I am special. I am me.
There’s no one else I’d rather be.
Manners Are A True Reflection Of Our Character
We say, “Thank you”,
We say, “Please”,
And “Excuse me”,
When we sneeze.
We have manners.
That’s the way we do what’s right!
